Learning English together
You learn better when you're not alone
Hello!
Do you ever feel discouraged about your English? Or like you want to give up?
I’ve met a lot of students who get frustrated with themselves because they keep making the same mistakes. Or they struggle to remember new vocabulary, or they’re still nervous about speaking after many years.
There are other learners who made good progress in the beginning but now they feel they’re not making progress any more.
Or maybe you’re like me and you just find it hard to stay motivated and consistent. I want to learn languages but I struggle to make the time to actually do it!
So how do you keep going when you feel like giving up? How can you stay positive?
There are many possible answers to this question but one thing that might help you is to get some support.
It’s hard learning a language on your own. It’s often much easier to keep going when you’re learning with other people.
There are lots of ways to feel less alone with your English studies:
💙 Have regular one-to-one lessons.
💙 Join a class or conversation club.
💙 Find a friend or a group of friends who are also learning English. Study and practise together.
💙 Find a language exchange partner. This means an English person who can help you with your English and, in exchange, you help them with your language.
💙 Join online communities such as Facebook groups.
How do these things help?
The most obvious benefit of learning with others is that you have somebody to practise with. You can talk to yourself or have a conversation with an AI but nothing beats real-life conversation for improving your speaking and confidence.
It’s also good to have somebody who will encourage you when you’re feeling down about your English. Another person can often see your strengths and progress when you can’t.
And it’s also easier to stay motivated and consistent. You don’t want to let other people down and often, it’s simply more fun!
Other benefits are that you can learn new words from each other, get new ideas and share resources.
I’m sure I’d do better with my own language learning if I joined a class or a group!
How I can help
If you don’t want to learn English on your own any more, here are 3 ways I can help you.
1. Join one of my Facebook groups
But don’t just join a group and forget about it – you need to take part to really feel the benefits.
My two Facebook groups are:
“English Conversation for Women”
This group is for women only, as the name suggests!
It’s a small group where you can connect with other women working on their English.
There’s a free Zoom session once a month for group members!
and
This group is for everyone.
Men and women, anyone of any gender can join this group!
There are lots of active members and we have some interesting conversations.

2. Upgrade to paid
If you upgrade your Substack membership to paid, you will get the chance to be part of a small community of learners. We’ll meet once a month on Zoom to chat. And if I get enough people, we can also have some kind of group chat in between our Zoom sessions too. You also get access to my lesson library. All of this for the ridiculously low price of £6 a month! Read more here.
3. Conversation Club
At the moment, I have a conversation group for women. We meet every Wednesday at 5.00pm, UK time and there’s just one space left. I’d also like to start a second group, maybe women only again or maybe for everyone this time. This is £40 a month. You can read more here and there’s also a contact page for you to get in touch.
I do have one-to-one lessons as well - ask me if you’d like to know more - but I was focusing more on the idea of working in a group today.
Looking forward to getting to know you better in a group!
Until next time,
Katie 💙
