The power of consistency
What happens when you learn English every day
Hello!
I have a confession. I’m a terrible student when it comes to learning languages!
I know all the struggles you face because I’ve faced them myself.
My biggest problem is consistency.
Last year, I decided to study German. I did some German every day for a month and then I forgot for a couple of days. I got back into it but then I slipped again. Now, I’m completely out of the habit and need to start again.
Does this sound familiar?
If you have the same problem, don’t worry! It’s normal. And it definitely doesn’t mean that you’re lazy or a bad student.
We’re all busy. It’s difficult to create new habits and stick to them.
But if you want to improve your English, it’s important to be consistent. You don’t have to spend hours studying. But learners who do something in English every day, even if it’s just for 15 minutes, will make the fastest progress.
When you get into the habit of spending a few minutes on your English every day:
💙 you’ll find it easier to keep going and stick to your routine
💙 you’ll remember more of what you learn
💙 you’ll see more progress
💙 and you’ll feel more confident.
Here are a few tips to help you be more consistent:
⭐ Find a good time for English and build it into your daily routine. Maybe you could listen to a podcast while cooking or read something in English on the train every day.
⭐ Start small. Maybe start with 10 or 15 minutes a day. It’s easier to keep going when it’s just a few minutes. You can always increase the time you spend later.
⭐ Make it enjoyable. It doesn’t have to feel like doing homework! For example, read about topics that interest you, watch videos, listen to English music or chat on social media.
⭐ Track your progress. Tick a box every day that you do some English or cross the days off on a calendar. This gives you a sense of achievement and it’s motivating.
⭐ Don’t be too upset with yourself if you miss a day. Just start again tomorrow.
⭐ It’s hard to be consistent when you’re learning on your own. Join one of my Facebook groups and learn with others! (Join this group for women or this group for everyone.)
⭐ Find a class or a teacher. I offer group lessons and one-to-one lessons online. You can find out more about my lessons here.
If I wanted to get serious about learning German again, these are exactly the sorts of things I would do too!
See you next week,
